Using Mail Chimp as a Thermomix Consultant

Here is my lesson plan for tonight’s Thermomix Branch Meeting. I plan to talk about

  • Mail chimp’s new DMARC policy
  • How to create a domain name
  • How to send better marketing emails.

Mail Chimp

As a business owner, you want to stay in contact with your customers. Mail Chimp provides an email service making it easy for you to send regular updates. Email marketing can be one of the most effective ways to build relationships and stay top of mind for both your customers and your potential customers.

TIP: Use segments to separate Thermomix Owners from those who have not purchased yet and use groups to separate TM5 owners from TM31 owners.

Mail Chimp can be used to share important information with your customers such as:

  • Recipes
  • Tips
  • Helpful Blogs
  • Host Rewards
  • Gift With Purchase
  • Thermomix Promotions
  • Inspiration
  • Photos
  • Cooking Class Dates
  • Plus much much more

DMARC 

DMARC stands for: domain based message authentication reporting and conformance.

Basically that means your emails may be rejected if you send them via mail chimp without your own business domain. If your “from” email is yourname@yahoo.com and you send an email from mail chimp, Yahoo will tell all email providers that the email did not come from them. Hence it might be rejected.

Overall this is as system that helps us all because it prevents phishing, spoofing and the delivery of fraudulent emails.

What Does This Mean For You?

If you continue using mail chimp with a basic “from” email address like yourname@yahoo.com or yourname@gmail.com then there is no guarantee that it will be received by your customers. The system will become more strict with time so it is important for you to acknowledge this risk now and change the way you communicate with your customers.

Your Options Are:

  1. Set up your own business domain name
  2. Use your email service to send the emails (e.g. gmail or yahoo or hotmail)
  3. Use a different form of communication – phone calls, Facebook, etc.

Create Your Own Domain Name

I recommend that you purchase your domain name from Crazy Domains or Google Domains.

Crazy domains because they are an Australian company and Google domains because it is easy to integrate very easily with gmail. However if you plan to take your business one step further and if you want to start your own blog or website, I recommend that you purchase your domain direct from Siteground Web Hosting.

Important Things To Know

  • Once you have your own domain name you will need to pay for an email service such as gmail. It will cost aprox $5 per month.
  • If you want to grow an online business, then purchase all the domain names that relate to your business name including .com .com.au .net etc. (Ask me why)

In My Humble Opinion

Have a think about your business and decide if this is right for you. I personally think that you should only create a domain name if you intend to use mail chimp to grow your business. Otherwise you are wasting your time and your money. Be honest with yourself.

Will you actually use it? Does it benefit you? Do your customers benefit from the information that you provide them? Is it worth an extra $5-10 per month from your business budget?

If you are ready to take your business to the next level, then I encourage you to get smart about the way you use your mail chimp. Do more with it. Be strategic. Use email marketing to grow your business and convert sales through building relationships.
